European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
