Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Players will gain the right to contest specific decisions from the official, following the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
